A resistive temperature detector (RTD) converts the measured physical value of temperature into an electrical output signal. Its operation is based on the known change in electrical resistance of a given material as a function of temperature variation. The RTD element is made of a pure material, often platinum.
ApplicationsThese devices are employed where very precise temperature measurement is required.
TechnologiesA small current is applied to the metal conductor. Rising temperature hinders the flow of electrons within, increasing resistance. This relationship is referred to as the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR).
Most RTD elements are made of platinum, and are capable of measurements from -200° to +850° C. Less expensive nickel is sometimes used, but is only effective between -60° and +350° C. Pt 100 detectors have a resistance of 100 at 0° C, while Pt1000 models have a resistance of 1000 at the same temperature.
Choice will depend on detector configuration, whether for surface mounting or immersion. Other factors include the operating environment, the measurement medium and the required temperature range.
