Description
The Visco Test Blade (Model 301) is an outflow blade for rapid and practical determination of the viscosity/consistency of paints and coatings for spray and brush application. It reduces the influence of surface tension compared with stirring with a spatula, providing a clearly definable end of run-off.
Test principle
The Visco Test Blade according to Rossmann is made of non-corrosive spring steel sheet and features two precisely dimensioned slits, each terminating in a round hole. The device acts as a planar equivalent of a capillary viscometer: the slits replace capillaries and the holes replace spheres. Different slit widths correspond to capillaries of varying diameters; the flow rate in a slit depends on slit width and on the viscosity and density of the liquid. Approximate correlation with a DIN flow cup (4 mm nozzle): the DIN flow cup run-off time is about 5 times greater than the run-off time in the narrow slit, or about 12 times greater than the run-off time in the wider slit.
Performance and evaluation of test
The blade is immersed so that a slit is entirely covered while the upper hole remains free, then lifted upright and the time measured until the fluid meniscus reaches the lower hole (visible by membrane burst over the hole). The run-off speed in the slit is also influenced by run-off on the remainder of the blade, so immersion depth must be adhered to precisely and the blade should be properly wetted before testing. For paints containing volatile solvents the run-off time should not exceed 10 s to minimize errors from evaporation. The slit widths are dimensioned for an approximate run-off time of 5 s: the narrow slit for spraying viscosities and the wider slit for brush-on consistencies (slits are marked accordingly).
