The Smoke Density Tester (Smoke from the Burning or Decomposition of Plastics), in accordance with ASTM D2843, is designed for measuring and observing the relative amounts of smoke obscuration generated by the burning or decomposition of plastics under controlled conditions.
Summary of the ASTM D2843 Test:
During the test, a 25mm by 25mm by 6mm specimen is placed on the support specimen holder, apply a propane burner flame (also auxiliary burner flame to molten material drops if needed) to the specimen, and burning is performed inside the 300mm by 300mm by 79mm test chamber, the chamber is instrumented with a light measurement system and EXIT sign on its back. The test is performed for 4mins, the light-absorption data are plotted versus time and the obscuration of the EXIT sign shall be recorded. Two indexes are used to rate the material: the maximum smoke produced and the smoke-density rating.
Exit Sign Test Apparatus consists of
• Stainless steel test chamber, the dimension is 300mm by 300mm by 790mm.
• The internal wall of the test chamber is coated with Teflon painting for anti-corrosion, also reducing the light reflection.
• The back of the internal chamber wall is fitted with an EXIT sign in red letters on a withe background, through the transparent observation window, the tester can distinguish the clear and blurred state of the specimen.
• The light source for testing is the incandescent type lamp, the photoelectric sensor is the silicon type photodiode, the silicon photodiode has the function of cosine calibration, at the same time equipped with color filters, filter out the ultraviolet and infrared light which cannot be recognized by human eyes.
