Description
Single-turn gap wave washers (single-turn gap wave springs) are single-layer, thin-ring elastic elements formed from metal strip or flat wire. They are designed to provide axial preload in confined spaces, for short deflections and low to medium forces. The open gap and free ends allow the outside diameter to expand during compression, preventing binding in a bore and improving fatigue life.

Function & principle
The gap and wave profile give the washer its elasticity. When compressed during assembly, the washer flattens and its peaks engage mating surfaces or a nut, helping to prevent fastener loosening and to reduce vibration and play.
