A flexible coupling is a mechanism designed to transfer power (torque and speed) between two rotating shafts, the drive and the driven shaft. Since alignment of the two is rarely perfect, a flexible coupling may be used to compensate. Such a mechanism can be rigid or flexible.
Couplings are used in nearly all branches of industry.
The most common sorts of flexible coupling are elastomer, jaw, spring, rubber tire and buffer.
Choice will depend on the speed and torque to be transmitted, as well as the relative position of the shafts, which is the determining factor.
