A power distribution cable is a part of the distribution network that links electrical energy production sites (power plants) to the final energy-consuming user.
Power distribution cables are used only for high-power transmission. They can also be found in railway transportation networks (trains, tramways, etc.) to power locomotives.
Power distribution cables often lack a protective sheath.
They are either buried or carried by metal-frame high-voltage towers. These cables, suspended over long distances, must bear elevated mechanical traction forces; steel is preferred to copper or aluminum, too ductile for such a use.
Because of the elevated levels of power, current and voltage they convey, it is essential to isolate these cables, putting them out of reach of the general public.
