Rotary torque sensors, also commonly called dynamic torque sensors, are devices designed to measure the torque applied to rotating parts.
Rotary torque sensors are used in applications requiring continuous torque measurements without cable interference. Rotary torque sensors can monitor the torque on a rotating shaft between a motor and a gear box. Some screwdrivers also use rotary torque sensors to control the applied torque. Other applications include engine and gear-box test stands.
Rotary torque sensors come in various configurations, depending on the type of shaft connection. There are hex drive, square drive, hollow shaft, flanged and through-shaft configurations. They use either a slip-ring connection, a non-contact rotary transformer or a non-contact wireless telemetry system for data transfer between the rotating shaft and the static element. In all of these types, a strain gauge on the rotating shaft produces a electronic signal proportional to the torque applied.
Important parameters to take into account when selecting rotary torque sensors are the RPMs, applied loads and the size of the shaft.
