ApplicationsPlate heat exchangers are used in many industrial processes to heat or cool a fluid.
TechnologiesThis device consists of many stacked plates, resembling a layer cake. Fluids circulate in the millimeter-sized space separating two plates. Plates have a special corrugated surface which creates a turbulent flow to maximize heat transfer.
The advantage of this type of exchanger is its simplicity and flexibility. The exchange surface can be modified by merely changing the number of plates. However, this number is limited by the significant pressure drop generated by this geometry. Similarly, compensating by increasing entry pressure leads to leakage risk, while too great a temperature difference between the fluids can result in plate deformation.
Choice of exchanger size and configuration involves many parameters, including the fluids' physical properties and temperatures, the flow rate and the energy to be exchanged.
