Description

Product overview
The 8.5‑digit multimeter 8558A combines high-resolution DC measurement with a high‑speed digitizer (up to 5 MS/s) for laboratory characterization and production test automation. Fast memory digitization (200 ns per reading) and high throughput support rapid characterization of transient signals and increased test-line yield.

Key features
  • 5 MS/s high‑resolution digitizing and up to 20 MHz analog bandwidth for voltage, 4 MHz for current
  • Up to 8.5 digits resolution at slow rates; up to 100,000 readings/s at 4.5 digits for high‑speed automated systems
  • Onboard memory storing up to 15 million readings
  • Color graphical display with trend plots, waveforms, FFT, histogram and statistics
  • Programmable front/rear electronic input switch and Visual Connection Management™ active terminals
  • Multiple USB host ports (front/rear) and support for USB thumb drives

Digitizing and measurement capabilities
  • Voltage digitizing: 100 mV – 1000 V, up to 5 MS/s and up to 20 MHz analog bandwidth
  • Current digitizing: 10 µA – 2 A, up to 5 MS/s and up to 4 MHz bandwidth
  • Voltage sensitivity to hundreds of nV and current sensitivity to hundreds of pA for low‑level transient detection
  • 18‑bit SAR ADC delivering high resolution at digitizing rates

Connectivity and system compatibility
  • GPIB (IEEE‑488.2), USBTMC, Ethernet remote interfaces
  • High‑speed memory transfer to PC: up to 500,000 readings/s (binary via USB), up to 200,000 readings/s via Ethernet/GPIB
  • SCPI command compatibility, 3458A/8508A emulation modes and IVI driver support
  • Support for MET/CAL calibration procedures
  • Trigger options: external BNC Trig In/Out (edge/level), timer, epoch, line; <100 ns external trigger latency

Usability and operation
  • Intuitive configuration menu and graphical UI reduce setup time
  • Multiple language support and flexible display modes for quick analysis
  • Handles and over‑molded spin wheel for transport and ergonomic operation
  • Automatable repeatable tasks; onboard memory reduces immediate PC dependency
