A spectrum analyzer measures and displays the spectrum of an electrical signal. This family of devices also includes wireless communications network analyzers and spectrometers used to analyze optical spectra.
ApplicationsThese signal measurement and analysis instruments are commonly used in the testing and development of radio frequency applications. There are both bench and portable models. Their ability to detect and quantify distortions and harmonics not visible on an oscilloscope enable them to analyze electronic components and sub-systems.
TechnologiesSwept-tuned analysis uses a super-heterodyne receiver to down-convert the signal frequency. A highly-selective band-pass filter reveals the amplitude of the signal component determined by the current state of a voltage-regulated oscillator as it sweeps through a range of frequencies.
Another technique, fast Fourier transformation (FFT) analysis, uses digitization of the signal and its treatment via Fourier series decomposition algorithms. Modern spectrum analyzers are hybrid instruments, furnishing near-real-time analysis. Some are specifically designed to analyze wireless communication network signals.
Choice will depend on sampling rate in bits, precision in decibels, frequency resolution, accessible bandwidth and the inclusion of special features.
