We have production facilities to manufacture a large range of components from flat and square section material. These facilities include multislide, power presses, special purpose and standard tooling.
Clips and pressings can be manufactured from a wide range of materials to suit their design and functional requirements.
We can manufacture components from:
- Carbon and Stainless Steels
- Beryllium - Copper
- Phosphor - Bronze
- Brass
- Aluminium
- Copper
- Nickel Base Alloys
We do have experience in the force testing of flat springs using jigs and fixtures. Calculations of force is a very lengthy process and in many cases force requirements can only be verified by prototype production and testing. We have specialised personnel able to produce small sample batches of components ready for testing before resorting to the production of expensive tooling for bulk production.
We suggest that you contact our technical department for advice before commencing any project that involves the use of clips and pressings.

Flat Springs can take on a multitude of forms, from a simple leaf spring which operates in a single plane (as in a switch, for example) to a complex clip action which may operate in several planes at the same time.
Emmotts has built an enviable reputation in this field; which is amply demonstrated by their market share. The extensive range of standard tooling which Emmotts maintains often means their specialist tooling is not required for short run work . In conjunction with this , Emmotts has an `in-house' tooling facility to ensure the economical production of high volume work. Materials range from mild a stainless steel, through to copper and nicol alloys.

· Single Turn Wave Springs
Single turn Wave Springs are perfect for tolerance take up and preloading an assembly. Smalley Single Turn Springs are coiled not stamped, providing for an affordable, precision load, stainless steel option. Wave Springs are stocked from ½” to 16” in both carbon and stainless steel.
· Bearing Preload
Single turn wave springs are ideal for bearing preload. The wave spring preloads the bearing through its outer race, taking up play in the bearing. By preloading a bearing, you will reduce bearing damage and wear.
Smalley’s Bearing Wave Spring Series comes in metric sizes to match popular bearing sizes. Over 150 standard bearing springs are available from stock, 16mm to 580mm. Specials are available for unique bearing sizes with No-Tooling-Charges™.

DETAILS OF CONSTRUCTION
RINGFEDER® Friction Springs consist of a series of separate inner and outer rings with mating taper faces. Under the application of an axial load F the wedge action of the taper faces expands the outer rings and contracts the inner rings radially, allowing axial deflection.
An effective taper face i.e. one half inner ring and one half outer ring is defined as one element.
The rings are manufactured from high quality spring steel. They are rolled or turned, calibrated for size, hardened and tempered. The rings are then given a final dimensional check.
Before despatch, every complete spring is mounted according to the assembly drawing, several times block loaded and checked against diagram data.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RINGFEDER® FRICTION SPRINGS
1. Absorption/damping of high kinetic energies
2. Absorption of high kinetic energies at small component sizes
(e.g. overload protection)
3. Versatility in design
4. High spring work combined with low weight and volume
5. Overload-safe in blocked position
6. Characteristics independent of loading rate
7. Diagram independent of temperature
8. Parallel and series arrangement of springs
9. Force-travel Diagram

The multiple and general-purpose functions of a helicoid are used to produce powerful springs of precision, accumulators of energy of the couplings...
The components upstream/downstream directly bordering are integrated to obtain a connection compact, cast solid, made safe.
The force of recall is restored with a constant value in compression, extension, torsion, in translation, alternatively but also simultaneously.
No the buckling of load, the whorls are reversed to avoid rotation in compression.
3 departures of whorls give more rigidity, improve the repeatability, safety. Even with a broken whorl, spring HELICAL remains operational.

Advantages of Machined Springs:
Quality-reliability
Repeatability-predictability
Precision elasticity
Integration with the entire product
Reduction of separate assemblies
Precise spring rates
Reduction of complexity and cost
When Helical Products Company revolutionized coupling technology with the HELI-CAL Flexure Concept over 40 years ago, design engineers around the world discovered more reliable alternatives to traditional couplings, U-joints, and precision springs. Today, millions of HELI-CAL Flexures can be found in applications ranging from satellite instruments and scientific apparatus to conveyors and oil-field equipment.
The most demanding extension, compression, torsion, and lateral bending and translation spring applications can benefit from HELI-CAL Flexures because of their superior function and inherent versatility. HELI-CAL Flexures benefit overall system designs through enhanced functionality, increased precision and cost reduction as a result of true Value Engineering. Predictable and repeatable elastic performance is close at hand when one chooses HELI-CAL Flexures.
The final result is an elegant, single-piece component designed for the full extent of your workload characteristics in all operational modes, not just a single functional phase. The strengths fundamental to the original HELI-CAL Flexure Concept can expand your engineering horizons. Now you can dream!

SPIR'ATOR® Prestressed Spiral Springs
The SPIR'ATOR prestressed spiral spring is produced by reverse winding a NEG'ATOR on an arbor and enclosing it in a case. Rotational energy can be obtained from either the arbor or case or, when linear motion is required, through use of a pulley and cable attachement.
The unique design of this encapsulated spring yields a compact power source which operates with higher working stress and can provide more than twice as many revolutions as a conventional power spring in the same size case. With torque and deflection being equal, a SPIR'ATOR generally requires 20% less space than a power spring. Most importantly, this power package creates a low torque gradient.

Wavo® Springs (RW Series)
Wavo Springs are a compact round wire wave springs designed to fit in tight radial and axial spaces. As an ideal alternative to belleville springs, Wavo Springs provide high and accurate force, while maintaining dimensional stability and precise load / deflection characteristics.
Wavo Springs are stocked in carbon and stainless steel with diameters from ½" to 6". Special designs are available with diameters up to 84".

A coiled length of spring strip which can be used to provide a tensional rotational moment, as in motive power for traditional manually wound clocks and watches.
So named because of their function as energy storers in clocks where a torsional effect is required through a large number of revolutions, Emmotts manufacture all variations of this product : open spriral and close coiled. Applications include cable reel retraction and torsional counterbalancing; while conventional clock springs are used in a veriety of scientific instruments.

An ONDUFIL ® spring washer is a round elastic item of the same family as our undulated, Belleville or Diaphragm spring washers, derived from a new manufacturing technology which consists of simultaneously rolling and corrugating a flat wire corresponding to the ring's width.
Due to smaller and smaller overall dimensions, compression forces (dips) in the field of larger and larger elastic deformations, and more and more varied stiffeners attainable with this complementary technology, an ONDUFIL® spring washer affords a perfect solution.
Our integrated design and engineering department using powerful computational software is capable today of responding rapidly to your needs.
Our totally integrated production workshop is capable today of making ONDUFIL® spring washers from a prototype for large manufacturing series production runs.
