Dynamic Structures and Materials (DSM) offers custom design capabilities for rotary and linear flexure-guided stages required for precision motion control and positioning applications and for challenging environments. DSM's flexure mechanism designs are used in unique positioning applications where backlash- and stiction-free performance are critical.
The 3-axis optomechanical positioning mount pictured here is a representative example of DSM's design capabilities for flexure-guided stage design. A custom, multi-axis design required three axes of flexure-guided motion for a 4 kg payload. The design requirements included ± 2 mm of linear travel adjustment in one axis and ± 2° of rotational adjustment in two additional axes. The assembly's design minimizes undesirable motion during temperature transients and shock loading.
DSM designed the optical mount using a titanium and aluminum construction. Fine thread screw adjusters provide manual adjustment capability, although the design lends itself to being easily reconfigured for motorized position adjustment. Pre-load springs and flexure pivots provide return force.

Flexure guided piezo stage positioners are used in a variety of applications from semiconductor manufacturing to precision machining.
PI introduced the first line of piezoelectric actuators more than 35 years ago. The technology's unique features such as: responsiveness; stiffness; life time and infinite resolution, have opened many markets since then, from semiconductor testing to precision machining. Typical piezo tools for precision machining are equipped with special waterproof casings which also provide the mechanical interface to the tooling machine and the tool servo.
Integrated metrology systems feature resolution in the nanometer and sub-nanometer range for closed-loop operation with digital or analog motion controllers. Flexure guiding mechanisms and motion amplifiers provide long traveling ranges and protect the piezo ceramics from off-axis forces.
PI piezo actuator systems are used throughout the world, often in applications that run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They improve the manufacturing precision of optics, crank shafts, bearings, cylinders, pistons, etc. in crucial processes such as diamond turning, milling, grinding, out-of-round boring or wear-compensation of tools.
Custom-manufactured high-performace piezoceramic actuators provide lifetimes of billions of cycles. Power amplifiers with energy recovery and 2000 W peak power are available for high-dynamics applications.

Intelligent positioning systems for the food industry and clean-room applications - Say good-bye to the hand wheel
PSE3xxx positioning systems make it easy to activate positioning and auxiliary axes automatically: halstrup-walcher presents a supplementary line of products housed in stainless steel (protection class IP 68) for use in clean rooms and for applications in the food and beverage industry.
For production and assembly stations that accommodate various formats (longitudinal and horizontal construction; 30 or 50 W), manually positioning equipment can consume a great deal of the overall production time depending on the quantities to be produced and the amount of variation in a given product. Because they can be set to operate automatically without the use of a hand wheel, intelligent positioning systems represent a convenient alternative. Designed as a complete solution with a brushless DC motor, these compact halstrup-walcher instruments also include a gear, controller and absolute measuring system. The integrated absolute measuring system eliminates the need for a time-consuming reference run. Connecting to a bus system (CAN-Open, Profibus PD or DeviceNet) simplifies the wiring. A hollow shaft with adjustable collar or an output shaft external square 10mm makes assembly quite simple. This positioning system is particularly suitable for automatically adjusting the positions of filling and packing machines in the pharmaceutical and food industries. Its stainless steel housing makes the PSE series ideal for use in clean rooms or for sterile filling processes. |

Intelligent positioning system PSE 3xx from halstrup-walcher
Positioning for auxiliary and positioning axes
Small lot sizes and a variety of product types require positioning and auxiliary axes to be flexible. Intelligent positioning systems are putting things in motion in cases where the traditional hand wheel was once all you needed.
Changing workpiece formats and repositioning die carriers are typical applications for the PSE 31x positioning systems with brushless DC motor. Designed as a complete solution, these compact instruments include a motor, gear, controller and absolute measuring system as well as a serial interface. This design allows the integrated electronic control feature to free up the machine's central control unit. No external power sections, proximity and limit switches, pulse generators or encoders required. Also, mounting these positioning systems is easy, thanks to a hollow shaft and adjustable collar requiring the operator merely to tighten a single screw. The unit is operable as soon as it is hooked up to a 24-volt power supply and data link. Existing equipment can be retrofitted simply by replacing the hand wheel, a modification that, due to the compact construction of the unit, can generally be accomplished without making any changes to the machine itself. halstrup-walcher offers PSE 31 positioning systems in three sizes: 1, 2 and 5 Nm.
