A right-angle gear reducer has an input shaft perpendicular to its output shaft. Other types (with parallel or coaxial shafts) can be converted to perpendicular transmission by the addition of an angle gear. However, in practice, worm and bevel gearing are favored in right-angle reducers because their shafts are already perpendicular.
All types of gearing are possible in a right-angle reducer: worm, bevel, planetary, helical, cylindrical. However, bevel and worm gears are inherently right-angle arrangements, whereas planetary gears are coaxial and cylindrical gears have parallel shafts, requiring the addition of an angle gear for perpendicular transmission.
Choice of gear reducer will depend on the speed and torque of both the input and output shafts. These data can be used to calculate the reduction ratio. Another factor is the relative orientation of the input and output shafts: coaxial, parallel, perpendicular, concurrent or not.
