The blade of a vertical band saw rides on two wheels. The rotary movement permits it to cut in the vertical plane. The throat distance is its primary characteristic, determining the height and width of the cut.
A vertical band saw usually is used to cut long objects, especially those made of wood.
Several types of vertical band saw exist. The operator of a manual band saw must move the object to be cut. There are also automatic and semi-automatic models, those whose table or head move and miter versions for oblique cuts.
An important criterion is the height and width of material to be cut; this will determine necessary throat dimensions. In addition, thickness and hardness of the material will dictate power requirements.
