A temperature transmitter uses electronic circuitry to send data via cable, fieldbus or radio frequency. Compact models have an integrated probe, while others are attached to a separate probe.
ApplicationsThese devices are used in the chemical and petrochemical industries, and in HVAC installations for process control. The transmitted data allows a monitoring post to regulate the system.
TechnologiesProbe-mounted transmitters use a standardized head. This also can be a compact model or one mounted on a DIN rail or on-site in a harsh environment. The probe uses a thermocouple, a two-, three- or four-wire platinum resistance or a voltage or current output.
Four-20 mA loop transmission requires only two wires, which also power the unit. The loop also may provide HART-protocol configuration and diagnostics. With more than two wires, the data can be sent via 0-10 V and the transmitter can be linked to a PROFIBUS or FOUNDATION fieldbus.
These devices ordinarily have galvanic isolation and may have their own display. Some can measure relative humidity or pressure.
Choice will depend on measurable temperature range, precision, available probes, environmental limits, certifications, protection index and data transfer options.
