The outstanding feature of the Contrinex series 700 inductive proximity switch is its one-piece stainless steel housing which, at one fell swoop, manages to eliminate the most critical weakness of this type of device. Forget damaged plastic caps, forget breakdowns due to inadequate sealing; they are things of the past! These switches are also exceptional in having very long operating distances, for instance 6 mm for the size M12 embeddable version. As a further bonus, these operating distances are also achieved on non-ferrous metals, e.g. aluminum and brass. These improvements result in completely new application possibilities for traditional inductive devices, without having to forego any of their advantages. In all others ways, they are normal proximity switches with the usual data and protection functions. Embeddable and non-embeddable versions in sizes M12, M18 and M30 are available immediately.

Capacitive sensors evaluate the change in capacitance which occurs when an object enters the electrical field of a capacitor. When appropriately dimensioned, the capacitive sensor is also able to “see through” certain non-metallic materials. This ability makes it the classical level detector, sensing the level of liquids and granular products through container walls..

Capacitive Sensors
Like inductive sensors, capacitive sensors function without physical contact with the target material. Capacitive sensors allow for the detection of both, conductive and non-conductive materials, but are most commonly used for sensing materials such as plastics, liquids, powders and granular materials.
In applications utilizing capacitive technology the sensitivity of capacitive proximity switches is dependent on the material characteristics of the target object. This material characteristic of the metal, plastic or liquid object will influence the sensing range and therefore the output detection point of the capacitive sensor. To allow for this variation in material characteristics Pepperl+Fuchs offers many models with adjustable sensitivity to allow for more flexibility in applying these sensors to your application.
These capacitive sensor products offer an alternative technology for use in applications where the use of inductive sensors may not be possible.

Capacitive Proximity Switches SIMATIC PXC
Monitoring Fill Levels and More
Capacitive proximity switches also operate contactless and equally respond almost instinctively when conductive or non- conductive materials in solid, powdery or liquid states have to be measured. They are particularly convincing in monitoring fill levels through non-metallic materials such as plastic or glass, and in counting objects made of various substances.

Proxistor capacitives produce an electric field with which they detect electrically conducting or non-conducting materials, solids particles or liquids, without making contact. Target detection is not affected by colour. Almost all Proxistor capacitives feature adjustable sensitivity allowing them to be set-up to differentiate between materials or compensate for varying mounting conditions.

Capacitive proximity sensors react to metals and non-metals that exceed a specific capacitance on approaching the active surface.
The sensing distance with resprect to a specific material is greater the higher the dielectric constant.
The sensors are used to detect objects, for counting functions and for all types of level monitoring applications (liquids and solid materials.

Capacitive sensors
The non-contact capacitive sensor transforms a dimension important for production technology (distance or fill level) into a signal for further evaluation. It functions on the basis of the modification of the electrical field surrounding its active zone. The basic structure of the sensor consists of a RC oscillator as sensor, a demodulator and an amplifier. Metals or non-metals which come close to the active zone of the capacitive sensor cause a capacity change, so that the RC oscillator begins to oscillate. As a result, the trigger downstream from the oscillator switches and the signal amplifier alters its output status. Depending on the type of device, the switching function at the output can be N.C, N.O or a change-over contact.
Applications
The capacitive proximity switches are suitable for the control and monitoring of machine processes and as signal transmitters for counting tasks, which involve metals and non-metals; for signalling levels in containers and through container walls, where liquid, powdered or grained substances are to be detected.

In all automated processes the use of sensors to provide information for the plc is of prime importance. Sensors supply the necessary signals on positions, end stops, levels or serve as pulse transmitters for counting jobs or for monitoring rotational speed. In industrial usage inductive and capacitive proximity switches are indispensable. As compared to mechanical switches they offer almost ideal conditions: non-contact, maintenance-free operation, high switching frequencies and switching accuracies as well as high protection against vibration, dust and humidity.
Inductive sensors detect all metals without contact, capacitive sensors detect nearly all solid and liquid media such as metal, glass, wood, plastic, water, oil, etc...
Both inductive and capacitive proximity switches are available in NAMUR versions. In conjunction with an NV0100/NV0200 amplifier the sensors can be used in zone 1 hazardous areas (the amplifier which contains Zener barriers as well as power supply and output must be mounted outside the hazardous area).

Features:
- Available in flush mountable body style
- Nickel plated housing with IP67 and IP69 protection rating
- Sensing distance of 2 mm (0.078” to 15 mm (0.591”)
Capacitive proximity sensors are ideal for sensing non-metal objects or for level control of fluids and granular material.
Adjustment can be used to zero out the presence of an object allowing the sensor to sense "through" a bulk material or liquid level.
The operating distance of a capacitive sensor is related to the dielectric constant (εr) of the object material to be detected. The higher the value of εr, the easier the detection of the object will be. The object to be detected through must have a lower εr value.
The threshold level is adjustable via a 20-turn potentiometer located at the rear of the sensor

The E2K-C family offers the application versatility of capacitive style proximity sensing in the flexibility of a threaded cylindrical sensor to detect metallic and non-metallic objects. This family of sensors are ideal for non-contact sensing of metallic and non-metallic targets including water, oil, glass, plastic and wood, even detecting liquid levels inside non-metallic containers. These sensors have multi-turn adjusters allowing the user-adjustable settings of the detection distance. The E2K-C can even reliably detect foamy liquids in sight glass applications.

Level and feed monitoring - that is one of the attributes of capacitive sensors. Irrespective of whether it involves a solid material such as paper or wood, granules or liquids. They reliably detect the status of the product in the production process and during final inspection.
Capacitive sensors supplied by SICK are always convenient to use. Sensing ranges between 1 and 25 mm allow clearance in almost any installation situation and they are extremely adaptable for a wide range of applications.
Thereby these sensors are suitable for extremely adverse industrial environments. Impurities and contamination, dust and airborne spray particles have little effect upon them as does electro-magnetic interference. No wonder that they are installed in the most diverse branches of industry. In the food industry, car industry or in storage and conveying technology.

The capacitive sensors with extreme long sensing distance are based on the three-electrode measuring-principle. this measuring principle allows much larger sensing distances compared to the two-electrode principle of common capacitive sensors, up to 10-times the norm. Although one achieves essentially larger switching distances with these capacitive systems, the size of the sensors is small.
KXS-Systems are used for applications where the sensing distances of standard sensors are not sufficient.
A further feature is the Duplex-or Triplex-operation. With the corresponding evaluation unit it is possible to adjust 1, 2 or 3 switching points with only one sensor.
