Casters make it easy to move carts and furniture. Materials and configuration differ depending on the load and the surface to be negotiated.
These devices are used on industrial carts, hand trucks, containers, technical furniture and pallet trucks. They are also found on medical transport units, supermarket carts and scaffolding.
The caster consists of a body with fork and attachment plate, and a wheel on a rim. The body is usually of sheet stainless steel plated with zinc or aluminum. The caster can be rigid or swiveling. Rim materials include, cast iron, polycarbonate, phenolic resin, polypropylene or nylon and other polyamides. Some iron rims can support as much as ten tons. The wheel can be inflatable or made of elastic rubber or polyurethane, which is harder.
The constituent materials will determine load capacity, the tendency of the rolling caster to generate electrostatic charges and the unit's ability to withstand chemicals and heat. Caster type also will affect the amount of noise it makes or the marks it leaves while in motion.
The caster is equipped with ball bearings. A pedal brake can be used to stop it from rotating or swiveling. Some have double or spherical wheels. Pallet trucks are sometimes fitted with rollers.
