Overview
The centrifugal paint-film applicator Model 334 Smart is a bench-mounted instrument designed to produce uniform coatings on test panels. It features a sheet-metal housing, touchpanel control, a specimen holder with collecting trough and a protective hood.
Purpose and application
The Model 334 Smart is used to produce reproducible, uniform coats on test panels (side length: 80 to 200 mm) for coating tests. The method provides time savings, high accuracy and excellent reproducibility, and is particularly suitable when very thin coatings require strict thickness constancy.
Application method
The specimen is centred and fixed with four locating screws. For fragile specimens (e.g. thin glass) a glass plate attachment is available; this attachment is also recommended for specimen thicknesses between 1 mm and 3 mm. A fixed centring setting speeds up series coating. An adequate quantity of coating material (approx. 5–10 g) is poured onto the centre of the specimen, which is rotated at a preset speed for a selected time. Centrifugal force spreads the coating; surplus is thrown off the edge and collected in the trough. Thixotropic coatings may show increased thickness toward the centre.
