Product concept
The combined S5 for Windows® and S7 for Windows® application integrates the functionality of both tools into a single software package, allowing programming, simulation and diagnostics for SIMATIC S5 and S7 PLC families.

S5 programming
S5 for Windows® provides tools to create, modify, test and document STEP5 programs for SIMATIC S5 controllers. Supported programming presentations include Function Block Diagram (FBD), Ladder Diagram (LAD) and Statement List (STL). Existing S5 programs can be edited directly without import/export. S5 for Windows® is compatible with the original Siemens programming unit and includes S5 Doctor functions for automated troubleshooting.

Editor and program handling
A symbolic table editor is integrated with search/replace and rewiring functions. Syntax checking and a multiple-segment editor facilitate creation of STL, FBD and LAD for complex functions. Cross references and symbol files display correct addresses and can be edited in-place. Address allocation with syntax check, clipboard support and conversion between STL, FBD and LAD are provided for efficient program handling.

Statusrecorder
The Statusrecorder captures block status over time for frame-by-frame analysis. Logged statuses include timestamps and allow switching between STL, CSF and LAD presentations for subsequent investigation.

Oscilloscope
The integrated Oscilloscope enhances diagnostics by monitoring dynamic signals in a familiar oscilloscope-style view. A virtual test probe allows watching I/O signals and local variable states at defined program positions. Recordings can be stopped for detailed timing analysis and saved for later inspection or archiving.

G5 / Step Sequence Programming
G5 for Windows® (integrated into S5 for Windows®) provides graphical step-sequence programming for STEP5 PLCs. It supports linear and branching sequences, simultaneous branches, jumps, time assignments and watchdog monitoring. The graphical editor is compatible with SIEMENS GRAPH5/GRAPH5/II and uses standard Siemens function and step blocks.

S7 programming
S7 for Windows® supports efficient programming of SIMATIC S7-300 and S7-400 series. The full S7 instruction set is available in STL, SFC and LAD presentations. All online functions are implemented; block lists, symbolic tables and module parameter presentations are supported.

S7 simulation and diagnostics
Version 7 adds S7-Simulation and BlockDiff for block comparisons. S7 Doctor functions provide automated troubleshooting and return stop reasons in plain text without special program adaptations.

Hardware configuration and catalogue
The hardware configuration enables module parameterization, address allocation and PROFIBUS setup. Module dialogs, change highlighting, GSD file support and an extendable hardware catalogue (including compatible third-party PROFIBUS components) are included. Offline creation and editing of configurations and module diagnostics are supported. Catalogue updates are available via the internet.
