OverviewThis apparatus is designed to obtain vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) data for binary systems and to produce x–y equilibrium charts using the Othmer method. The unit demonstrates four theoretical stages and features a jacketed column to reduce external temperature influence.
Function- x and y denote the mole fraction of the lower-boiling component in the liquid phase (x) and vapor phase (y).
- When a binary mixture is heated to equilibrium, sample the liquid and vapor phases and analyze their compositions by gas chromatography to obtain (x, y) data points.
- By changing the feed composition and repeating measurements, additional (x, y) points are obtained to build a complete x–y diagram.
- The column is jacketed to minimize the influence of ambient temperature on equilibrium measurements.
