Product OverviewThe WL4020 tubular push-pull solenoid is an electromechanical linear actuator designed for rapid, repeatable push and pull motions in industrial automation. Typical construction includes a copper coil, steel plunger, return spring and zinc-plated carbon-steel housing. (Note: product page reference WL4020; datasheet/model entry appears as WL4042.)
Key Features- Compact tubular design suitable for integration in confined assemblies
- Fast response times (millisecond order) and repeatable linear travel
- Stable push/pull output across short strokes
- Available in DC 12 V and 24 V (other voltages customizable) and multiple stroke options
- Low maintenance, energy-efficient coil design
- Options for different mounting types, lead lengths and duty cycles; customization available
How It WorksWhen DC power is applied, current through the coil windings generates a magnetic field that attracts or repels the steel plunger, producing linear push or pull movement. Removing power allows the return spring to reposition the plunger. Output force depends on coil voltage/current, stroke length, plunger material and magnetic circuit geometry.
Applications- Industrial automation: ejection, locking, switching, sortation and conveyor interfaces
- Vending machines, smart lockers and electronic locking mechanisms
- Compact linear actuation in medical and diagnostic devices
- Household appliances, packaging and textile machinery
- Automotive actuation for locking, fuel or transmission components
- High-speed mechanisms in robotics and sorting systems
Advantages & Disadvantages- Advantages: small footprint, rapid response, predictable repeatability, customizable electrical/mechanical parameters
- Disadvantages: coil heating at high duty cycles (may reduce lifetime); force falls with increased stroke; lower peak forces than pneumatic/hydraulic systems for heavy loads
Troubleshooting Summary- Weak force: verify supply voltage, coil resistance and excessive stroke; check for magnetic interference
- Overheating: reduce duty cycle, verify correct voltage and improve ventilation
- Sticking or slow movement: inspect for dirt, corrosion, lubrication issues or bent/worn parts
- Electrical faults: measure coil resistance for open or shorted windings and inspect leads
