There are two main types of xenon arc instrument, water cooled and air cooled. The type of cooling has only a negligible effect on the spectral output of the lamp, but does have an influence on the overall design and on the optical filtering system. Atlas Fade-Ometers and Weather-Ometers use water-cooled xenon arc exclusively; the Atlas Xenotest instruments and the Atlas SUNTEST exposure units use air-cooled xenon lamps.

Solar Simulation Chambers
Type SC.../ MH and SC... / MHG
In combination with the irradiation unit (metal halide lamp and outdoor filter), all three models provide a full-function climate chamber. SC models are equipped with either MH (Metal Halide) or MHG (Metal Halide Global) lamps. Since both optical systems are very similar, both yield equally good results with respect to irradiance and its spatial distribution. However, the MHG lamp is recommended for tests requiring an irradiance of > 1,000 W/m². One important difference lies in the spectral distribution of the radiation that, at certain wavelengths, does not exhibit the energy peaks in the MHG spectrum that are found in the MH spectrum. These peaks can produce widely differing results in samples with a corresponding sensitivity. Another advantage of the MHG lamp lies in the ability to vary output across a specific range as well in the electronic power regulation.

DSET Laboratories, Inc. pioneered accelerated outdoor weathering in the 1960's with its Fresnel-reflecting solar concentration devices - Emma® (Equatorial Mount with Mirrors for Acceleration) and EMMAQUA® (Equatorial Mount with Mirrors for Acceleration with Water). Economical, proven and continuously improved for even greater accuracy, EMMAQUA is the most widely used outdoor accelerated weathering test method in the world today.
The test apparatus is a follow-the-sun rack with mirrors positioned as tangents to simulate a parabolic trough.
The target board, located at the focal line of the mirrors, lies under a wind tunnel along which a deflector directs ambient temperature cooling air across the specimens. A fan spray nozzle assembly is employed to spray the specimens with deionized water in accordance with established schedules. Night time spray cycles can be used to keep the specimens moist during the night time hours.
Atlas recommends the exposure of test specimens based on an accumulated dose of ultraviolet radiation measured in MJ/m2. However, test can also be timed on total radiation, Langleys, or real time. The duration can be based on Arizona or Florida radiation equivalents. The UV radiation must be measured as direct beam to avoid errors when evaluating the exposure duration.

Thermal Shock-Sudden Impact Test Chamber, CRT Series
Useful Equipment for the realization of Tests about the possible injury of the structure of a sample because of sudden changes of temperature.
If these Thermal Shock or Impact Tests are established in a cyclical way, they can cause dilatations, deformations or even a breaking over the structure of the sample, electric mistakes in its connection or many alterations in its physical-chemical properties.
These tests are very advisable in electric or electronic stanch devices, illuminations, bimetals, rubber- metal, all of them directed to the Aeronautic sector, Automotion Sector, the sector pertaining to the railway and Building Materials.
The Technologic foundation of the Thermal Shock is based on communicate a cold compartment with a heat one through a moving platform. The moving of this platform is realized through a pneumatic action being the step between the compartments in a few seconds.
The Thermal Shock Chambers are classified according to the following concepts:
Cold/ Heat compartments in Vertical construction (CRTV) or Horizontal one (CRTH) and useful volume of the compartments.
According to the range of temperature for each compartment (heat to 250ºC and cold to -70ºC).

Thermal Shock Chamber
Thermal Shock Chambers make it possible to automatically and repeatedly transfer a test item from a hot environment to a cold environment or from a cold environment to a hot environment. This process is defined as true thermal shock and it is different from thermal cycling, where the specimen is introduced into the chamber and the chamber temperature is then cycled. A true thermal shock chamber can achieve a 265°C temperature variation rapidly, while thermal cycling may take hours to ramp up or down.
Associated Environmental Systems offers Thermal Shock Chambers that support true thermal shock testing.
Two Station Chambers provide an upper compartment for a heated environment and a lower compartment for a cold environment.
Three Station Chambers contain an additional middle compartment that is exposed to room ambient (ambient dwell) and is enclosed with expanded metal.
Each chamber contains a specimen holding basket (transport carriage) pneumatically operated from a compressed air source.

temperature from –80 to +220°C within seconds. The test specimens are placed in a lifting basket which is moved between the test rooms which are conditioned to different temperatures (hot and cold chamber).
Advantages
- Large air volume flow, air guidance cross-flow
- Moving of lifting basket within a few seconds
- Adjustable overheating and pre-temperature conditioning

Fluorescent UV lamps, similar in mechanical and electrical characteristics to those used for residential and commercial lighting, have been developed with specific spectral distributions. Tests using fluorescent lamps are useful for relative rank comparisons between materials under specific conditions, but the comparison to service lifetime performance or correlation to outdoor exposures may not be valid. The best use of the UV lamps is for general screening tests, such as checking for gross formulation errors with an artificially harsh exposure.
