LED displays use light-emitting diodes to create alphanumeric characters. The diodes can be organized by segment or by dot-matrix, and are controlled by a decoding sequence.
Segment displays are used at industrial sites to show measurement readouts. Bar graphs serving as VU meters are also LED displays. Giant public information displays use large dot matrices.
Seven-segment displays are the simplest type. They can represent numbers from zero to nine and the decimal point. They are controlled by eight electrical supply lines, one for each LED.
In order to reduce the number of command signals, especially when the displays are combined to create numbers, a multiplexing and sequential access organization is used. This organization can be built-in or provided by external circuits. Retinal persistence allows successive activation of the segments to be used.
Dot-matrix displays offer more possibilities; their 35 dots can display almost any type of alphanumeric character.
The type of character to be shown determines the type of display: seven or more segments, or dot-matrix. Color is also an important element to consider.
