A planetary, or epicyclic gear motor combines a motor with planetary gears in a pre-assembled, ready-to-use package. It provides significant reduction ratios and high output in a compact unit. Unless other reduction stages or angle gears are added, this type of gearing is coaxial.
These gear motors are widely used in industry because they offer greater reduction ratios than other types of the same size. They also are common where input and output shafts must be coaxial.
Gear motors can be classified by either motor or gear type. Here, the determinant factor is the planetary or epicyclic gear arrangement.
