Description

Overview
The Scott Volumeter is described in compendia (USP and Ph. Eur.) and is suitable for evaluating the bulk density of a diverse range of powders and granules. A comparison of the bulk and tapped density of a powder provides insight into behaviour during handling and storage and can be used to determine standard metrics such as Carr’s Index and Hausner Ratio.

System context
The Powder Testing Workstation™ PTW provides a versatile solution integrating six powder testing methods into a single unit. Complementary equipment (Powder Testing Assistant™ PTA 100i) simplifies testing by guiding users through methods, automating calculations and recording results to reduce transcription errors.

Supported test methods
  • Angle of Repose
  • Flow Through an Orifice via Cylinder
  • Flow Through an Orifice via Funnel
  • Bulk Density via Scott Volumeter
  • Shear Cell
  • Flowability and Bulk Density of Metal Powders (Hall, Gustavsson and Carney Flowmeter)

Bulk Density via Scott Volumeter (product details)
The Scott Volumeter is suitable for evaluating bulk density for powders and granules. Comparison of bulk and tapped density supports calculation of Carr’s Index and Hausner Ratio and helps assess powder behaviour during handling and storage. Typical use is for pharmacopeial assessments and R&D or QC evaluations.

Angle of Repose (module summary)
Provides a simple method for assessing frictional characteristics of powders to predict gravitational flow issues. Comprises a 100 mm diameter circular test platform and a digital height gauge (powder heights up to 145 mm readable). The tangent of the Angle of Repose (θ) is obtained by measuring powder cone height (mm) and dividing by 50; the inverse tangent yields the angle in degrees.

Flow - Through an Orifice (cylinder)
Module comprises a stainless-steel cylinder (76 mm x 57 mm, 200 mL capacity) supplied with 20 interchangeable stainless-steel disks with precision orifices (4–36 mm). Tests can be quantitative (fixed mass or fixed time) or used to derive intrinsic flow properties (Flowability Index) from comparative assessments.

Flow - Through an Orifice (funnel)
Designed according to compendial flowability guidance. Supplied with quick-change nozzles (5, 7, 10, 15 and 25 mm) manufactured from pharmaceutical-grade 316 stainless steel; testing uses a simple shutter system. Optional Balance and Timer attachments support mass vs time testing.

Complementary equipment and accessories
  • Powder Testing Assistant™ PTA 100i: guides methods step-by-step, automates measurements and calculations, records results
  • Timer Attachment: supports time vs mass testing for Cylinder or Funnel methods
  • Balance options (multiple models supported for mass measurements)
  • Anti-static Grounding Kit
  • Storage racks for funnels and cylinders

Regulatory / Standards compliance (bulk density module)
Ph. Eur. 2.9.34
USP <616>
ISO-3923-2 (1981)
ASTM B329-20

Additional notes
The PTW was engineered to meet standards from USP, Ph. Eur., ASTM and ISO for powder flow testing and can be configured to combine multiple powder test methods into one workstation. The system is engineered for easy cleaning and maintenance and is compatible with the PTA 100i data-assistant to improve workflow efficiency and data integrity.
