ApplicationsThese devices not only monitor materials quality, but also indicate the characteristics of minerals. Metals testing primarily uses the Brinell, Vickers and Rockwell methods. The Shore method is generally employed when testing plastics.
TechnologiesThere are three different hardness tests, each making use of a different device. An indentation test measures the resistance of the material to deformation. Scratch testing determines the resistance of the surface to scoring with another object. The third procedure tests for resilience.
How to chooseChoice will depend on the hardness range to be tested and the required degree of accuracy. Size, shape and other characteristics of the object also must be taken into account, as well as the response time of the device. Another important factor is whether the tester will be used on just one or several different materials.
