Overview
The PAINT BORER 518 USB is a portable coating thickness gauge operating by the standardised wedge-cut (keel) method. It combines a 50x high-resolution digital microscope with integrated adjustable lighting and a 2 MP CMOS sensor. USB connectivity to PC/Laptop/WINDOWS-Tablet and supplied software enable digital capture, measurement and documentation directly from the specimen.

Design
The instrument features a compact, rugged housing that encloses the drilling device, digital microscope, specimen illumination and battery. A horizontally sliding carriage carries the drill and microscope so the device does not need to be repositioned after drilling. The drill is spring-mounted and engages automatically when pressed. Exchangeable carbide drills with defined cutting angles cover three standard measuring ranges. Illumination offers continuous or pulsed modes with three intensity levels. Power is provided by a rechargeable 9 V battery; mains operation with the supplied power pack is also possible.

Operation

• Place a contrast mark at the test point and position the instrument on the specimen
• Move the drill over the mark and lower to start drilling through the coating to substrate
• Slide the microscope over the hole and switch on illumination to view the cut
• Use the PC display and cursor to mark the hole center and visible layer transition lines for measurement

The included software computes layer thicknesses from the drilling angle (tangential function), supports multilayer analysis and compensates for ellipsoid holes on one-dimensionally curved geometries. Image display can be BW or false colour to enhance contrast. Full measurement logs (data + image) can be saved to avoid information loss.

Software & Connectivity
USB 2.0 / 3.0 interface. Image format: PNG. On-screen display languages: German, English. Compatible with Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8 / 10 / 11. Standard software includes measurement formulas, tangential calculation, display options and data/image logging.
