DescriptionThe PAINT BORER 518 MC measures coating thickness using the standardised wedge-cut drilling method: a defined-angle drill produces a small conical hole and the projected width of the cut face is used to calculate layer thickness by a geometrical relationship. The 50× measuring microscope shows concentric circles; the difference in radii measured on the scale multiplied by the scale factor yields the film thickness.
The Measuring InstrumentThe PAINT BORER 518 MC is a compact, self-contained instrument housing the drilling device, measuring microscope, specimen illumination and rechargeable battery. A horizontal sliding carriage integrates drill and microscope so the instrument does not need to be repositioned between drilling and measuring. Spring-mounted carbide drills engage automatically when pressed onto the sample; interchangeable drills with defined cutting angles are supplied for three standard measuring ranges. The 50× microscope has a 100-line scale providing 1% resolution independent of range. The rear light control offers continuous light or three illumination levels and an interrupted mode to extend battery life. A 9 V rechargeable battery is included; mains operation with the charger is possible. The microscope can be moved in two perpendicular axes and the scale rotated for evaluation of elliptical holes on curved or tilted specimens.
Operation- Apply a contrast mark with a felt-tip pen and place the instrument on the sample
- Position and lower the drill; motor starts automatically and drills through the coating to the substrate
- Move microscope over the hole and switch on illumination
- Count scale divisions between substrate and contrast mark and multiply by the scale factor to obtain thickness
