Description

The Wet Film Thickness Gauge Model 333 is a mechanical gauge for checking freshly applied coatings to determine wet film thickness and to estimate the resulting dry film thickness. It is portable, simple to operate and available in different measuring ranges.

Advantages
Portable and simple to operate, suitable for use by unskilled personnel.
Mechanical direct-reading design for quick on-site inspection.
Measurements can be performed on any substrate (glass, wood, metal or plastic).
Lower cost compared with many alternative systems.

Application
Suitable for use on all flat and slightly curved surfaces, provided the gauge can be applied parallel to the axis of curvature.

Test principle
The comb-shaped measuring blade has equally long end teeth and intermediate teeth at progressively increasing distances from the substrate. Teeth 6 to 11 penetrate the coating while teeth 2 to 5 do not touch the material. The measured result is the mean value between tooth 5 and tooth 6.

Design and function
The rectangular measuring blade is made from polished stainless steel plate with teeth on two sides cut to progressively decreasing distances from the substrate; engraved figures indicate the distance in µm from the base material. The instrument is available in three measuring ranges and is supplied in a synthetic leather pocket.

Measuring procedure
Select the measuring blade corresponding to the expected range and place it perpendicular on the test surface. Apply slight pressure, perform a short combing movement and lift the instrument vertically. Read the wet film thickness at the scale position where the first tooth shows traces of coating material.
