Description

Overview
The PAINTXPLORER 548 is a mechanical-optical coating thickness measuring instrument designed to extend the application range of the PAINT BORER 518 MC/518 USB. It is intended for sensitive drillings into rigid or brittle substrates and permits measurement of coating layers up to 2000 µm. As a compact tabletop laboratory unit the device features an improved high-precision rotating/sliding axle-bearing to reduce cutting-edge chipping. The measuring microscope is available separately, keeping the drilling unit slim and handheld-capable while also compatible with the included stand.

General description
The PAINTXPLORER 548 uses the standardized wedge-cutting (keil) method combined with drilling to determine coating thickness. It was developed to minimize limitations encountered when drilling brittle materials and to provide precise layer separation even if minor eccentricity occurs in the drill or centre axle. The unit can be operated by hand or used on the supplied drilling stand; mobility is limited to the length of the mains cable and the unit is intended as laboratory equipment.

Operation
  • Apply a contrast mark to the coating.
  • Place the instrument on the specimen and position the drill directly above the test point. If using the stand, position the test point beneath the drill and fix the specimen by rotating the pressure plate.
  • Drill through the coating down to the substrate.
  • Perform the measurement with a microscope, taking the scale factor into account.
