The laser ceilometer from JENOPTIK Laser, Optik, Systeme GmbH measures such atmospheric parameters as cloud height, visibility and the height of a planetary boundary layer. The product provides the first ever metrological device to safely detect also cloud layers and cirrus clouds at height levels up to 15 kilometers. Measurement is accomplished with an opto-electronic laser sensor that relies on the LIDAR principle, an optical version of radar: A solid-state laser emits light pulses into the atmosphere. The light which is scattered by air and aerosol molecules is collected with a specific optical setup to be detected by a highly sensitive photo receiver (APD). By analyzing the pulse transit time and the intensity of backscattered light portions, smart algorithms compute a high-resolution aerosol height profile along with other related measurement readings. With integrated heating and cooling functionality and designed for autonomous operation, the CHM 15k can be relied to perform in any weather conditions.

What is electrical erosion and how does it cause bearing failure?
In electric motors that are controlled by Variable Frequency Drives (VFD), the VFD induces electrical currents that may increase until they find discharge paths to earth via the motor frame. The electric currents pass through the bearing and when the voltage reaches a level to overcome the lubricant film layer in the bearing, electrical discharge occurs. Over time this can cause electrical erosion. Electrical erosion can cause bearings to fail very prematurely causing motor failure and unplanned downtime.

FERITSCOPE FMP30 – Ferrite content measurement in austenitic steel
The rugged FERITSCOPE® FMP30 with plug-in type smart probe is suited for fast, non-destructive and accurate measurement of ferrite content on-site or in the lab according to the magnetic inductive method.
The measurement range is from 0.1 to 80 % Fe or from 0.1 to 110 FN. The measurement options are either measurable in Ferrit-percentage “%Fe” or in Ferrit numbers “FN”.

PDA-based magnetometer
A new magnetometer was presented by Narda Safety Test Solutions at Arbeitsschutz aktuell 2008. The THM1176-PDA device, which consists of a high-performance PDA and a precision, non-directional probe connected via USB, can be used as a stand-alone hand-held unit or in conjunction with a PC. It measures magnetic fields having flux densities of up to 20 Tesla in the frequency range from 0 Hz to 1 kHz.
The THM1176-PDA can be used anywhere where high magnetic field strengths need to be measured and monitored: on scientific and medical equipment, such as magnetic resonance tomographs; in industry on equipment for smelting metals, or on transformer stations and large-scale electric motor drives, such as railroad locomotives.
The technical advantages of the new magnetometer are:
• Non-directional measurement thanks to isotropic, 3-axis Hall-effect probe, so the result is independent of the probe direction relative to the field
• very small sensor area gives pinpoint accuracy when measuring strong, non-homogeneous fields
• Simple operation using the PDA touch screen or MS-Windows PC software (everything is included in the package)

The measurement of precipitation is an important element in efforts to maintain the water balance. Mierij Meteo plays its part in this respect by providing meteorological consultancy services and developing new products.
The model 200 rain gauge operates on the basis of a tipping bucket mechanism. The bucket is available in capacities that correspond with precipitation of 0.2 mm. The bucket assembly acts as a seesaw. As soon as the upper bucket is full, the lower “empty” bucket is lifted to be filled, while
the lower bucket is drained. The tipping bucket pivots on bearings which minimizes friction and wear. Each tip generates an electrical impulse.
The total precipitation during a certain period of time equals the number of impulses multiplied by the contents of the bucket used multiplied by a

General description:
The Gill MatPack is a compact and lightweight multi-sensor weather station instrument that measures the most essential weather parameters. Gill ultrasonic technology, as used in the proven WindSonic anemometer, measures wind speed and direction.
Temperature and humidity are measured using industry standard probes housed in a naturally aspirated radiation shield. The instrument kit uses a rugged U-bolt mounting clamp that attaches to any vertical pipe up to 50mm in diameter.
The instrument can be supplied with either a digital SDI-12 output or a four channel analogue output option, suitable to interface with industry standard loggers. Low power consumption enables the weather station instrument to be used in remote locations where power is at a premium. An electrical junction box is fitted to the mounting bracket allowing convenient termination of all electrical cables.
