What a Steam Moisture Separator DoesWet steam can carry suspended droplets through the distribution system. A properly selected separator changes the flow path or uses centrifugal action so that liquid separates from the steam and collects at the drain. The condensate then leaves through a correctly arranged drainage system. The insulation jacket is an external thermal component that reduces heat loss from the separator surface but does not perform the separation function or correct separator sizing, blocked drains or failed traps.
Vertical Separator InsulationVertical separators commonly have a cylindrical body with top, side or tangential connections and a drain at the lower point. A removable cover may use a shell wrap, a shaped upper-head panel and a lower section that terminates around the drain. Supports, lifting lugs and instrument connections are incorporated into the pattern. The blanket must not trap leaking condensate or place weight on small-bore drain piping; the drain route and trap should remain visible or independently accessible.
Horizontal Separator InsulationHorizontal separators may require several longitudinal sections divided around the body, heads, saddle supports and nozzles. Lower panels must fit around condensate connections while remaining practical to remove. Panel divisions on larger units should keep each piece light enough for safe handling. Clearances to platforms, pipe supports and adjacent valves influence closure positions and orientation marks can prevent incorrect reassembly.
Body, Head and Nozzle PanelingShell Panels: main body can use one wraparound section or multiple labeled panels depending on size and available space; controlled overlaps limit exposed seams without restricting access.
Head Sections: dished, hemispherical, conical and flat end areas require shaped patterns; head panels can be removable separately where internal access is required.
Nozzle Collars: inlet, outlet, vent and instrument nozzles can pass through reinforced openings or use fitted collars; transitions must not load tubing, gauges or small connections.
Condensate Drain and Steam Trap AccessReliable drainage is essential. The jacket must not block the bottom outlet, drain valve, strainer, check valve, test point or connected steam trap. Frequently checked components can have independent covers so they can be inspected without removing body panels. Provide the full drain-station layout because small-bore piping, unions and trap bodies can determine closure placement; drain valves and tubing must not be used to support the blanket.
Materials and Layer ConstructionA typical removable separator cover combines an inner liner, flexible insulation core and outer protective layer. Thread, closures and reinforcement are selected as part of the complete construction.
- Inner liner: faces the separator surface; options include fiberglass, silica and other high-temperature fabrics with reinforcement around nozzles, drain openings and repeated-access areas.
- Insulation core: flexible fiberglass, silica and other high-temperature insulation materials; core type and thickness depend on surface temperature, thermal objective, available clearance and acceptable panel weight. Different zones may use different thicknesses.
- Outer layer: silicone-coated fiberglass, PTFE-coated fabric, aluminized fabric or uncoated high-temperature textile chosen for indoor/outdoor use, water/oil/chemical splash resistance, cleaning practice, radiant heat and handling frequency.
- Fastening system: D-ring straps, buckles, lacing hooks, wire, springs and hook-and-loop closures may be used; fasteners are placed for safe reach without standing below a drain or reaching across a hot line.
Steam-System Temperature and Thermal DataSelection requires measured or calculated external surface temperature, normal operating condition, maximum upset condition and ambient environment. Provide startup conditions and intermittent service if relevant. For thermal targets include vessel dimensions, insulation thickness limits, ambient temperature and airflow. Thermal performance must be assessed for the complete installed cover including seams, collars and unavoidable openings.
Inspection Openings and InstrumentsSeparators may include pressure gauges, temperature sensors, nameplates, lifting lugs, vents, relief connections, inspection plugs or removable covers. Identify which items must remain exposed and which can be beneath an access flap. Instruments requiring ventilation, calibration or immediate operation should not be enclosed without approval.
Indoor and Outdoor InstallationsIndoor installations require resistance to handling, oil mist and mechanical-room conditions. Outdoor separators face rain, wind, UV exposure and possible water entry at seams; panel overlaps, closure orientation and bottom drainage should be planned for actual mounting position. Coated fabrics improve weather resistance but assemblies should not be assumed permanently waterproof without review.
Leak Detection and Wet InsulationJackets can conceal leakage if inspection access is ignored. Separate collars and removable lower panels support routine checks. If steam or condensate enters the jacket, remove affected panels and evaluate liner, core, stitching and fasteners. Do not reuse wet insulation over an active leak; repair and verify equipment first.
Measurements Required for Manufacturing- Identify separator manufacturer, model, orientation and quantity.
- Measure body diameter, straight length or height and overall envelope.
- Record shape and depth of both end heads.
- Locate inlet and outlet nozzles and measure flange or connection dimensions.
- Measure bottom drain, attached valve, trap station and small-bore piping.
- Locate vents, gauges, sensors, relief connections and inspection points.
- Record supports, saddles, legs, brackets and lifting lugs.
- Measure adjacent pipe insulation and show where it terminates.
- Show clearances to walls, platforms, handrails and other equipment.
- Mark all parts that must remain uncovered or independently accessible.
Panel Identification and InstallationLarge jacket sets can be supplied with position labels and a simple panel map that include equipment number, upper/lower position, orientation and installation sequence. Follow site temperature, pressure and access procedures before installation. Match panel labels to the separator and orientation, install body and head sections without loading instruments or drains, fit nozzle collars and transitions to adjoining insulation, close fasteners evenly and confirm designed overlaps. Verify drains, traps, vents, gauges and inspection points remain accessible.
Removal, Inspection and ReuseRemove only the panels needed for planned service when practical; place them on a clean, dry surface and retain identification sequence. Inspect for cuts, abrasion, scorching, wet insulation, oil or chemical contamination, compressed core and damaged closures. Before reinstalling, confirm flanges, drains, trap connections and instruments are assembled correctly and free from leakage. Do not force panels over new tubing or modified fittings; updated dimensions are required when separator arrangement has changed.
Safety and Design BoundariesThe removable jacket is an external passive insulation product. It is not a pressure-retaining component, separator internal, steam trap, drainage device, leak-containment system, fire barrier or equipment guard. It must not obstruct relief connections, vents, drains, operating handles, inspection plates or required labels. Insulation cannot compensate for incorrect separator selection, poor piping layout or failed condensate removal; responsibility for steam-system design, pressure safety, drainage, inspection and approval remains with the equipment owner and responsible engineer.
Custom Manufacturing and OEM SupplySingle replacement covers, complete separator jacket sets and repeat orders can be manufactured from approved drawings, field measurement sheets, templates or physical samples. Project options include numbered panels, customer part numbers, equipment tags, drawing revision references, inspection records and individual packaging. For repeat production, report any change to nozzles, instruments, supports or drain stations before release.
