OverviewBSTFLEX removable elbow and pipe fitting insulation covers are custom-patterned for industrial bends, tees, reducers and other irregular piping components. Shaped reusable sections follow the fitting geometry, connect with adjacent pipe insulation and can be removed for inspection or maintenance without destroying the complete insulation system.
Fittings Covered by This Product- 90-degree pipe elbows
- 45-degree pipe elbows
- Long-radius and short-radius bends
- Return bends and 180-degree elbows
- Equal and reducing tees
- Concentric reducers
- Eccentric reducers
- Wye fittings and branch connections
- Couplings and unions where a shaped thermal cover is required
- Custom welded transitions and irregular pipe fittings
Why Pipe Fittings Require Shaped InsulationA flat rectangular blanket can wrinkle or pull away when wrapped around a curved elbow. At a tee, three pipe openings must align correctly. A reducer needs two different end diameters and a controlled transition between them. If the pattern does not match the fitting, the insulation may become compressed in one area and leave an open gap in another. BSTFLEX uses shaped panels, segmented curves, reinforced seams and fitted openings to follow these profiles. Overlap flaps can connect the cover with adjacent straight-pipe jackets or permanent insulation. The objective is a practical removable assembly, not a loose sheet tied around an irregular component.
Typical Industrial Applications- Steam and condensate piping
- Thermal oil circulation systems
- Hot water and process heating lines
- Chemical and petrochemical piping
- Refinery and power-generation equipment
- Boiler and heat-exchanger connections
- Food and beverage processing lines
- Marine engine-room piping
- Exhaust and high-temperature gas piping
- OEM skids and compact machinery pipework
Cover Designs for Different Fitting Shapes- Segmented Elbow Insulation Cover — A segmented pattern follows the curve of a pipe elbow. Panel number and shape depend on elbow angle, centreline radius, pipe diameter and insulation thickness. Closure can be on outside or inside of the bend.
- Split Elbow Jacket — Two-part or multi-part construction for tight clearances next to walls or neighbouring lines; allows one side removal independently.
- Tee Insulation Cover — Includes openings for main pipe and branch connection; different patterns for equal and reducing tees.
- Reducer Insulation Jacket — Transitions between two pipe diameters; concentric vs eccentric requires different patterns and orientation identification.
- Custom Transition Cover — Fabricated transitions and non-standard fittings can be covered from drawings, templates, 3D measurement or physical samples.
Material Options- Outer protective layer — Silicone coated fiberglass, PTFE coated fiberglass, aluminized fiberglass or other coated heat-resistant fabrics | Protects against handling, oil, moisture, weather, abrasion and site contamination
- Insulation core — Fiberglass needle mat, silica needle mat, ceramic fiber insulation or aerogel-based insulation | Provides thermal resistance around the fitting
- Hot-face liner — Fiberglass cloth, silica fabric, stainless steel foil or stainless steel mesh | Contains the insulation and faces the heated component
- Fastening system — D-rings and straps, stainless steel hooks, springs, lacing wire, buckles or other reusable closures | Secures shaped panels and allows repeated opening
- Reinforcement — Quilting pins, local wear patches, stainless steel mesh, reinforced seams and edge protection | Controls insulation movement around curved or branching shapes
How to Measure a Pipe Elbow- Pipe outside diameter
- Elbow angle (normally 45 or 90 degrees)
- Centreline radius, if known
- Long-radius or short-radius construction
- Straight tangent length available at each end
- Outside diameter of adjacent pipe insulation
- Required insulation thickness
- Location of welds, supports, drains, tracing and instruments
- Clearance from walls, floors and neighbouring pipes
- Preferred closure location and removal direction
How to Measure Tees and ReducersFor a tee, record the main pipe diameter, branch diameter, branch angle and centre-to-end dimensions in all directions. State whether the fitting is an equal tee or reducing tee and include enough straight length for overlap. For a reducer, provide large and small pipe diameters, overall reducer length and installed orientation. For eccentric reducers, identify whether the flat side is top, bottom or side.
Connection to Adjacent Pipe InsulationThe fitting cover should meet the adjoining insulation without forcing removal of an unnecessary length of pipe jacket. End flaps, drawcords, straps or shaped overlaps may be used depending on pipe diameter, temperature and site preference. When adjoining pipe has permanent insulation and metal cladding, the cover must be sized around the finished outside diameter.
Closure Placement and Installation ClearanceA well-designed cover must be removable in the space available around the fitting. Seams and overlaps should be positioned to discourage water entry on horizontal outdoor piping. On vertical fittings, additional support may be required so the insulation core and cover sections do not move downward during service.
Installation Procedure- Follow plant procedures for approaching and working around the piping system
- Confirm the fitting is free from active leakage and damage
- Identify the correct cover and installation direction
- Position the centre of the shaped cover over the elbow, tee or reducer
- Align every pipe opening before tightening closures
- Secure fasteners gradually to avoid pulling the cover off centre
- Arrange end overlaps around adjacent insulation
- Check that drains, gauges, supports and inspection points remain accessible
Inspection and ReinstallationAfter removal, keep the cover dry and avoid sharp folding that can damage or displace the insulation core. Inspect liner, seams, fasteners and shaped panels before reinstallation. A wet, contaminated or heavily compressed core should be evaluated before returning the cover to service. The fitting surface and weld areas should be inspected according to the facility maintenance plan.
OEM and Replacement ManufacturingBSTFLEX can manufacture prototypes, project quantities and repeat OEM pipe-fitting covers from drawings, measurements, templates, photographs or approved samples. Equipment numbers, line numbers, installation arrows, section labels and project packaging can be added for site identification.
