OverviewBSTFLEX removable reactor insulation jackets are custom-made passive thermal covers for chemical and process reactors. Each jacket is patterned around the vessel shell, heads, agitator drive, nozzles, manways, instruments and support structure, using removable panels that preserve routine access for inspection, cleaning and maintenance.
Product Highlights- Custom patterned from drawings, dimensions, photographs or a physical template
- Modular sections for the shell, upper head, lower head, nozzles and access points
- Designed around agitator drives, seals, instruments, manways and support members
- Removable closures for planned maintenance and repeated installation
- Insulation thickness and textile construction selected for the service conditions
- Suitable for one-off replacement work, equipment packages and repeat OEM orders
Industrial Reactor ApplicationsThe jacket is intended for external insulation of industrial reactors and reaction vessels used in chemical processing, specialty materials, resins, coatings, adhesives, food processing, pharmaceutical production and other controlled-temperature operations. Typical equipment includes agitated vessels, mixing reactors, polymerization reactors, batch reactors and jacketed process vessels. Every application is reviewed separately and the final design depends on process temperature, external surface temperature, atmosphere, cleaning method, chemical splash risk and required access frequency.
Why a Reactor Needs a Dedicated Insulation PatternA reactor contains agitator drives, gearbox and multiple penetrations that generic tank blankets do not accommodate. A dedicated pattern divides the reactor into practical insulation zones with adjacent panels overlapping appropriately and cutouts or removable collars to fit around penetrations, enabling section-by-section access rather than removal of an oversized cover.
Typical Jacket ZonesReactor area — Typical design approach — Access consideration
Straight shell — Segmented wraparound panels with controlled overlaps — Keep nameplates, inspection points and connections available
Upper head — Shaped sections fitted around nozzles and the agitator assembly — Allow removal near seals, couplings and serviceable instruments
Lower head — Contoured panels for dished, hemispherical or conical geometry — Maintain access to the outlet, valve and drain area
Nozzles and flanges — Separate collars or small removable covers — Do not conceal joints that require inspection
Manway — Independent cover with its own closure system — Remove without disturbing the main shell panels
Supports — Cutouts and fitted transitions around legs, lugs or skirts — Avoid loading instruments, load cells and moving components
Three-Layer Jacket ConstructionMost removable reactor covers use an inner liner, a flexible insulation core and an outer protective layer. Materials are chosen as a compatible system so liner, thread, closures and insulation core match the actual conditions.
- Hot-face liner: Fiberglass, silica or other high-temperature textiles selected by contact temperature, abrasion, geometry and process environment; reinforcement can be added at edges and repeated-access areas.
- Insulation core: Needled fiberglass, silica and other flexible high-temperature insulation materials; core type and thickness selected for operating condition, space allowance and thermal performance.
- Outer protective layer: Options include silicone-coated fiberglass, PTFE-coated fabric, aluminized fabric or uncoated high-temperature textiles depending on moisture, oil, chemical splash, radiant heat, weather and cleaning requirements.
Closure and Reinforcement OptionsClosure hardware is placed for technician access after installation and may include D-ring straps, buckles, lacing hooks, wire, springs or hook-and-loop closures. High-wear areas receive extra fabric, webbing or protective flaps. Hook-and-loop fasteners are used where appropriate but metal fastening systems can be specified for hotter surfaces or washdown/contamination concerns.
Thermal Requirements and Operating DataSelection should not be based on process temperature alone. External vessel wall temperature, heat-transfer jacket arrangement, batch cycle, ambient conditions, airflow and desired outside-surface target influence performance. For calculated thermal results supply reactor dimensions, insulation space, ambient range and operating conditions so final construction can be approved against the actual process and site requirements.
Agitator, Seal and Instrument AccessPanel layout can include shaped openings and detachable collars for agitator shaft, seal housing, drive base, probes, pressure instruments, sight ports and feed connections. Components requiring cooling, ventilation, movement or frequent adjustment must remain clear. Access flaps or separate small covers can be added for routine visibility.
Food, Pharmaceutical and Clean-Process AreasFor clean production areas, external surface construction can be adapted for housekeeping and cleaning procedures using smooth coated fabrics, covered insulation edges and appropriate closure layout. The removable jacket is an external insulation component and is not intended for direct contact with processed product.
Outdoor, Moisture and Chemical ExposureOutdoor reactors and equipment exposed to washdown require attention at seams, panel overlaps, penetrations and drainage areas. Coated outer fabrics improve weather and splash resistance but assemblies should not be assumed permanently watertight. Identify all chemicals, oils, solvents and cleaning agents that may contact the cover to evaluate compatibility with outer fabric, coating, thread, webbing and hardware.
Measurements Required for Manufacturing- Record the reactor shell outside diameter or width and depth
- Measure straight-side height and identify circumferential seams
- Provide upper and lower head type, depth and transition geometry
- Locate every nozzle, flange, manway, sight glass, sensor and outlet
- Show agitator drive, seal housing, mounting base and required clearance
- Identify legs, skirts, brackets, lifting lugs, load cells and pipe supports
- Mark components that must remain visible, ventilated or immediately accessible
- State available clearance around adjacent piping, platforms and guards
Panel Identification and InstallationLarge systems can be supplied as numbered panels with orientation marks, mating references and a panel map. Installation recommendations include confirming safe condition per site procedures, matching panel labels to drawings, installing head and penetration pieces in sequence, fitting shell sections without forcing over instruments or pipework, closing fasteners evenly and inspecting nozzles, vents and moving parts before startup.
Removal, Inspection and ReuseRemove only the sections needed for planned work where practical. After removal inspect fabric for cuts, abrasion, chemical attack, contamination and damaged stitching. Check the insulation core for compression, moisture or displacement and examine all fasteners before reinstallation. Jackets that have absorbed unknown liquids, contacted incompatible chemicals or suffered severe heat exposure should be evaluated before reuse; damaged panels can often be replaced individually when identification and dimensional records exist.
Safety and Design BoundariesThe removable cover is an external thermal insulation product and is not a pressure-retaining component, process seal, fireproofing system, spill-containment device or substitute for equipment guarding. It must not block pressure-relief devices, vents, drains, cooling openings, rotating equipment, required labels or emergency access. Surface temperature reduction does not by itself establish a safe-touch condition and the equipment owner is responsible for process safety, hazard review, material compatibility and approval of the installed configuration.
Custom and OEM ManufacturingBSTFLEX supports replacement jackets for existing reactors, insulation sets for new equipment packages and repeat production for OEM projects. Designs can be developed from engineering drawings, field dimensions or samples. Panel numbering, customer part numbers, inspection records and special packaging can be included when agreed during quotation. For repeat orders, controlled drawings and approved construction details help maintain consistency; notify the supplier of any reactor modification before reordering.
