Description

Product overview
BSTFLEX removable boiler insulation blankets are custom-made covers for industrial boiler doors, drum ends, inspection openings and other service areas where permanent insulation would restrict maintenance. Each reusable panel is patterned around hinges, latches, burners, viewing ports and connected components while keeping required operating and safety devices accessible.

Where Removable Boiler Covers Are Used
  • Front and rear boiler doors
  • Burner door areas with approved clearances
  • Boiler drum ends and removable drum covers
  • Manways, handholes and inspection openings
  • Header access covers and cleanout doors
  • Bolted access panels and service hatches
  • Selected casing sections that require frequent removal
  • Connected flanges, valves, steam lines and fittings

Boiler Door and Drum Cover Design
A boiler door cover must do more than match its outside dimensions. The pattern has to account for hinges, lifting arms, latches, handles, peepholes, burner components, inspection ports and the door swing. A blanket that crosses these features can slow maintenance or become damaged the first time the door is opened. The cover can be divided into a central panel and smaller edge pieces, or produced as a split assembly that opens around hardware. Cutouts may be finished with reinforced collars. Removable flaps can provide access to viewing or inspection points that are approved to remain beneath the insulation during operation.

Typical Panel Arrangements
  • Round boiler door — one-piece or segmented circular cover; fit around hinges, clamps, handles and burner openings
  • Rectangular access door — flat or box-shaped removable panel; maintain latch movement and full door travel
  • Drum end — contoured end cover with perimeter fastening; allow access to manways, instruments and connections
  • Manway or handhole — independent small cover; remove without disturbing adjacent casing insulation
  • Header access area — numbered modular panels; match the inspection sequence and available working space
  • Irregular casing section — multi-piece fitted assembly; control panel weight and prevent interference with nearby equipment

Finished Cover Versus Loose Insulation Blanket
The product described is a finished removable assembly made to the equipment shape. A complete cover normally includes a hot-face liner, a flexible insulation core, an outer protective fabric, sewn edges, reinforcement and a closure system. It is not a replacement for internal refractory, burner tile, door casting insulation, furnace lining or boiler door gasket.

Material Construction
  • Hot-Face Liner: Fiberglass, silica and other high-temperature fabrics can be selected according to the measured contact temperature, abrasion and equipment geometry. Reinforcements are applied where handling is concentrated.
  • Flexible Insulation Core: Core options include needled fiberglass, silica and other flexible insulation materials. Core type, density and thickness depend on surface temperature, desired thermal result, available clearance and acceptable panel weight.
  • Outer Protective Fabric: Options include silicone-coated fiberglass, PTFE-coated fabric, aluminized fabric or uncoated high-temperature textile depending on location, handling, moisture, oil, cleaning practice and radiant heat exposure.
  • Thread, Fasteners and Hardware: Thread and closures are matched to actual temperatures and loads. Options include D-ring straps, lacing hooks, wire, springs, buckles and hook-and-loop closures where conditions permit.

Required Operating Information
Boiler pressure or steam rating does not by itself define the insulation jacket. Information needed for cover selection includes external metal temperature at the mounting area, normal and maximum operating conditions, ambient environment and the desired thermal result. Provide measured surface temperatures whenever possible and identify differing temperatures around door edges, burner areas and casing sections.

Heat Loss and Personnel Exposure
A properly fitted boiler jacket can reduce heat leaving an exposed hot surface and lower the temperature presented to the surrounding work area. Insulation does not automatically establish a safe-touch surface; hot fasteners, uncovered penetrations and temporary gaps can remain and must be managed with guarding, signage, procedures and verification.

Burner Area Clearances
The burner end requires careful review. Combustion-air openings, burner fans, motors, flame scanners, fuel components, controls and cooling paths must not be restricted. The removable cover should follow clearances and ventilation requirements supplied by the boiler and burner manufacturers. Mark exclusion zones and identify components that require observation, adjustment or emergency access.

Inspection Points That Must Remain Accessible
  • Safety valves, vents and relief discharge components
  • Gauge glasses, level controls and pressure instruments
  • Flame scanners, observation ports and combustion-air openings
  • Burner controls, motors, linkages and fuel-train components
  • Identification plates, inspection stamps and required labels
  • Blowdown, drain and sampling connections
  • Hinges, handles, latches and lifting points

Indoor, Outdoor and Washdown Conditions
Outdoor projects require attention to rain entry, wind loading, panel overlaps, bottom drainage and corrosion of closure hardware. Washdown areas require compatible outer fabrics and seam placement that does not trap liquid. Sewn removable jackets should not be represented as hermetically sealed or permanently waterproof; wet or chemically contaminated insulation may require removal and replacement.

Measurements for a Custom Boiler Blanket
Equipment drawings are preferred, but clear field measurements can be used. Include wide photographs showing the entire boiler and close photographs of the area to be insulated. Measurements and records should identify: type and manufacturer model, door/drum/access panel dimensions, hinge/latch/handle/bolt locations, burner/nozzle/port projections, door-opening path and clearances to piping/platforms/guards, surfaces that must remain uncovered, preferred panel divisions and maximum panel weight.

Panel Labels and Installation Sequence
Multi-panel covers can be supplied with durable position labels and an installation sketch to help return each section to the correct location. Install only when the boiler is in a condition permitted by the site safety procedure. Fit sections without forcing them beneath cables or tubing and close fasteners evenly.

Maintenance and Reuse
After removal, lay panels on a clean, dry surface and inspect hot-face fabric, outer cover, stitching, insulation core and fasteners. Look for scorching, abrasion, cuts, oil saturation, moisture, chemical attack, compressed insulation and missing hardware. Do not reinstall panels that could interfere with door closure, burner operation or safety devices. Individual panels can often be reproduced from the original controlled pattern if the equipment has not changed.

What This Product Does Not Replace
The blanket is an external passive insulation cover. It is not boiler refractory, internal furnace lining, a pressure-retaining part, a door seal, a combustion safeguard, a fire barrier or an equipment guard. It does not correct leaking doors, damaged refractory, failed gaskets, poor combustion or unsafe boiler operation. Any abnormal hot spot should be investigated before covering.

Custom Manufacturing and Project Controls
Custom one-off replacement covers, complete insulation sets and repeat production can be supplied from fabrication drawings, marked photographs, field measurement sheets or an approved physical sample. Project controls may include customer part numbers, panel identification, drawing revision references and inspection records.
