Product OverviewBSTFLEX removable turbine insulation blankets are custom-engineered, shaped, reusable thermal insulation sections designed for approved external surfaces on industrial steam and gas turbine systems. Numbered modular sections are patterned for casings, valve chests, flanges, piping connections, exhaust components and inspection points to support planned maintenance while preserving the overall insulation system.
Industrial Turbine Applications- Steam turbine casing insulation
- Gas turbine external hot-section insulation
- High-pressure and intermediate-pressure turbine sections
- Steam inlet and valve-chest insulation
- Stop-valve and control-valve insulation
- Turbine steam piping and flange covers
- Approved exhaust diffuser and transition surfaces
- Generator and turbine auxiliary hot components
- Power-plant outage replacement blankets
- OEM and retrofit turbine insulation systems
Numbered Modular Blanket System- Unique blanket or panel number for each section
- Turbine unit and equipment identification
- Upper, lower, left and right position marking
- Installation direction and layer sequence
- Layer identification when multiple layers are used
- Reference to an installation map or drawing
- Replacement part number for repeat orders
Blanket ConstructionComponent — Typical options — Design considerations
Outer protective layer — Silicone‑coated fiberglass, PTFE‑coated fiberglass, aluminized fiberglass or other specified heat‑resistant fabrics — Environmental resistance (oil mist, moisture, abrasion), handling and outage conditions
Insulation core — Fiberglass needle mat, silica needle mat, ceramic fiber or aerogel‑based insulation — Operating temperature, required thermal result, available thickness and weight constraints
Hot-face liner — Silica fabric, fiberglass fabric, stainless steel foil or mesh — Surface temperature, vibration, abrasion and contact with casing geometry
Fastening system — Stainless steel hooks, springs, lacing wire, buckles, D‑rings or project‑specified closures — Temperature, vibration, access and removal frequency
Reinforcement and support — Stainless steel mesh, quilting pins, support tabs, reinforced seams and local wear layers — Vertical surfaces, overhead sections and repeated handling
Single-Layer and Multi-Layer SystemsA single removable layer may be suitable for some surfaces. Other projects use inner and outer blankets with staggered seams to reduce direct heat paths and improve coverage. Each inner blanket should be identified to match the corresponding outer blanket and the installation map must show the correct sequence.
Areas Requiring Openings or Separate Covers- Casing split lines and bolted joints
- Inspection ports and borescope openings
- Temperature, pressure and vibration instruments
- Drains, vents and steam leak‑off connections
- Valve stems, actuators and control linkages
- Lifting points and support brackets
- Nameplates and equipment identification
- Bearing housings and lubrication‑system interfaces
- Cooling and ventilation openings
- Moving parts and required mechanical clearances
Information Required for a Turbine Blanket Project- Turbine type and equipment model
- Approved insulation boundary
- General arrangement and casing drawings
- Surface temperatures and operating conditions
- Required insulation thickness or external surface target
- Location of casing joints, flanges, valve chests and pipe connections
- Position of instruments, drains, vents and access points
- Thermal‑expansion movement and required clearances
- Indoor, outdoor, oil‑mist or washdown exposure
- Maintenance sequence and expected removal frequency
- Maximum practical section dimensions and handling weight
- Part numbering, labels, packing and outage‑delivery requirements
Replacement Turbine BlanketsBegin replacement projects with a blanket inventory documenting identification number, installation position, dimensions, condition and reason for replacement. Do not copy old sections without verifying fit and condition.
Vibration, Thermal Growth and MovementClosures must retain the blanket without placing rigid restraints across moving joints or required clearances. Layout must allow for specified thermal expansion and not bridge independently moving components.
Oil, Steam and ContaminationDo not install insulation over active oil or steam leakage. Outer fabrics can be selected for environmental resistance, but coated fabric does not correct leaking components. Maintain drainage paths and leak‑detection visibility where required.
Installation Planning- Confirm the turbine is in the approved condition for insulation work
- Check the blanket schedule and installation map
- Install inner‑layer or reference sections first where specified
- Align cut‑outs around instruments, joints, valves and supports
- Connect adjoining sections without compressing the insulation unevenly
- Engage fasteners in the specified sequence and distribute tension
- Confirm all section numbers and direction labels
- Inspect seams, overlaps, access points and mechanical clearances
- Record any missing, damaged or incorrectly fitting section
Inspection Between OutagesVisible blanket surfaces, seams and fasteners should be checked according to the plant inspection plan. After removal, store blankets in a clean, dry and identified condition and confirm liner, core, outer cover and closures remain suitable for service before reinstallation.
OEM and Project ManufacturingBSTFLEX supports prototype sections, partial replacement sets and complete turbine blanket projects. Manufacturing can be developed from approved drawings, dimensional records, templates, digital data or physical samples. Project documentation may include a blanket schedule, section labels, packing lists and installation references.
