OverviewBSTFLEX steam trap insulation jackets are removable, custom-patterned covers for approved steam-trap assemblies. Each jacket is shaped around the trap body, connections, strainer cap, blowdown point and testing access to reduce exposed heat while allowing removal for inspection, cleaning or replacement.
Why Steam Traps Need a Removable JacketSteam traps require regular testing and maintenance because dirt, wear, blockage or internal failure change discharge behavior. Permanent insulation often must be cut away to access the trap. A removable jacket preserves insulation integrity and can be reopened and reinstalled during routine service.
- Provides removable thermal coverage for approved trap bodies
- Reduces exposed hot surfaces in operational areas
- Maintains access for testing and preventive maintenance
- Accommodates integral strainers, plugs and blowdown connections
- Designed for repeated removal and reinstallation
- Can be identified by trap number or steam-line location
Insulation ConsiderationsNot all trap types should be fully enclosed. Some thermostatic or temperature-responsive traps rely on body heat loss for correct operation; covering certain areas can alter response time or impair function. Select the complete jacket assembly (outer cover, insulation core, liner, fasteners) to match operating temperatures and exposure conditions.
Steam Trap TypesCustom jackets are suitable for diverse constructions:
- Thermodynamic disc traps
- Float and thermostatic traps
- Inverted bucket traps
- Balanced-pressure thermostatic traps
- Bimetallic traps
- Pressure-powered condensate equipment
- Traps with integral strainers
- Trap stations with unions, flanges and test valves
What the Jacket Can IncludeDepending on project design, a jacket may cover only the trap body or extend over selected connections. Separate covers for adjacent valves, flanges and strainers allow independent servicing.
- Steam-trap body coverage
- Inlet and outlet connection openings
- Integral strainer body and removable access flap
- Shaped opening for blowdown valves
- Testing port or sensor access
- Identification window or permanent label
- Overlap with adjoining pipe insulation
Material Construction- Outer cover: silicone-coated fiberglass, PTFE-coated fiberglass, aluminized fiberglass or other heat-resistant coated fabrics (select for indoor/outdoor exposure, oil, moisture and abrasion)
- Insulation core: fiberglass needle mat, silica needle mat, ceramic fiber or aerogel-based insulation (select for operating temperature and available thickness)
- Hot-face liner: fiberglass cloth, silica fabric, stainless steel foil or mesh (select for contact temperature and wear)
- Fasteners: D-rings & straps, stainless hooks, springs, lacing wire or buckles (select for temperature, maintenance frequency and clearance)
- Reinforcement: quilting pins, reinforced seams, stainless mesh, edge protection or wear patches (consider repeated handling and jacket shape)
Measurement Information RequiredPrefer a trap model drawing. If unavailable, provide clear photos and these measurements:
- Trap manufacturer and model (if known)
- Trap type or operating principle
- Inlet and outlet pipe outside diameters
- Connection type: threaded, socket-weld, flanged or other
- Overall body length, width and height
- Centreline-to-body dimensions and installed orientation
- Position and size of strainer caps, plugs and blowdown valves
- Testing points, sensor locations and areas that must remain visible
- Outside diameter of adjacent pipe insulation and clearances
- Operating temperature, pressure and environment
Access for Testing and MaintenanceThe jacket can be fully removable for testing or include an access flap aligned to the test point. Ensure strainer caps, blowdown valves and drains remain usable and that leakage is not directed into the insulation core.
Jacket Layout for a Steam Trap StationA trap station may include isolation valves, strainer, steam trap, check valve and connecting pipework. Modular, separate jackets with clear labels are preferred so individual components can be serviced without removing the whole station insulation.
Installation- Verify jacket matches trap number, model and installation location
- Follow plant safety procedures for live or isolated steam equipment
- Inspect for active leaks before installing insulation
- Position the jacket without blocking blowdown, testing or inspection points
- Align openings with adjoining pipe insulation
- Engage closures gradually and distribute tension evenly
- Ensure tags, flow direction and controls remain visible
- Confirm jacket does not interfere with trap operation or drainage
Inspection and ReuseRemove the jacket per maintenance procedure and inspect outer cover, liner, seams, fasteners and insulation core before reinstallation. Do not reinstall wet or chemically contaminated insulation. Repair active leaks before returning insulation to service.
Outdoor Steam Trap JacketsOutdoor installations need water-control measures: weather-resistant fabrics, protected seams, suitable overlaps and drainage-aware fitting. Insulation reduces heat loss but does not guarantee freeze protection if steam is lost.
OEM and Replacement SupplyJackets can be manufactured from drawings, field dimensions, photos, templates or approved samples. Permanent labels can show trap number, line number, jacket section and installation direction. Note previous jacket issues (blocked access, interference, difficult closures) when ordering replacements.
