Description

Overview
Time is money on a job site. This guide helps contractors select and operate small portable concrete pumps correctly to reduce blockages and downtime. It focuses on matching mix, pipework and machine parameters for reliable conveying.

On-site tips
On-site tip: when pumping fine-stone concrete, match pipe diameter and working pressure. For a vertical pour with an 80 mm pipe, maintain system pressure around 12–15 MPa to ensure steady delivery and avoid separation.

Practical advice
Do not add water directly into the hopper to thin a dry mix; this separates fines and coarse aggregate and causes clogs at the S-valve. Use water-reducing admixtures instead. For vertical work, adjust pipe size, pressure and maximum aggregate to prevent stalls and material segregation.

Core specs that actually matter
Key components are delivery cylinders and pistons. For long or high-distance conveying without stalling, target a working pressure of 10–28 MPa. Prefer cylinder diameters of 160–200 mm and piston strokes over 1 m for higher volume at lower engine speeds.

Open vs. Closed Hydraulic Systems
Open hydraulic systems use an independent oil pump and larger tank; they perform better for long shifts and hot environments by reducing overheating risk. Pressure safety devices (automatic regulators) protect hoses and components by lowering output when a clog causes a pressure spike.

Tight alleys and long pipe runs — rules and warnings
Every 90° elbow adds friction equivalent to roughly 5 m of straight horizontal pipe. Minimize bends and use large-radius elbows. For 80 mm pipe use aggregate < 2 cm; for 100 mm pipe keep aggregate < 3 cm. Target a consistency near 'thick oatmeal' for tight-site or muddy pours: not too dry, not too watery.

Job-type recommendations
  • Home basements & underfloor heating: electric motor drive — quiet, no exhaust, steady flow for fine leveling.
  • Tunnels & mining shafts: narrow chassis (<1.5 m) and a low-slung hopper so mini-dumpers can feed directly.
  • Retaining walls and slope work: connect to an external air compressor for high-pressure mortar or specialised applications.

Troubleshooting — quick fixes
  • Pressure loss and slurry leak at hopper: check wear plate and cutting ring; if gap > 2 mm replace cutting ring, tighten rear tension bolts; consider carbide-welded cutting ring for longer life.
  • Pipe completely jammed (reverse pump won’t clear): stop motor, bleed hydraulic pressure, tap along the steel line to locate the clog, unclamp and clear, then lubricate pipe with water/mortar before restart.
  • Hydraulic oil temperature >60°C: clean radiator fins and cooling fan, inspect control valves for internal leaks, replace oil if anti-wear properties are degraded.
