Test plate

Overview

Complete system for determining the bearing capacity of the soil in compliance with the reference standards. Plate load testing is used to verify bearing capacity of the substrate soil, foundation layers and base layers of pavements. It is also used to assess surface bearing capacity and compaction state of granular materials and road surfaces.

Test principle
The test transmits increasing load increments to the soil via a hydraulic thrust system and a circular plate while simultaneously measuring settlement. It determines deformation/compressibility by applying load through a hydraulic system acting on a circular plate. Settlement induced by the plate is recorded by centesimal or digital acquisition systems referenced to a frame outside the influence area of the load. The mass of the reaction weight must be chosen according to the expected load.

Application and plates
Tests are generally performed with metal plates of standard diameters from 300 to 760 mm and can be carried out from ground level or inside pits/wells (depth limited by jack size and extensions).
