ApplicationsBoost converters are used in portable electronic devices and electric vehicles. These devices are capable of raising voltage without recourse to several accumulators in series. Switched mode power supplies are 80% efficient, regardless of the difference between input and output voltage. For this reason, they are commonly used for electrical power supply.
TechnologiesVoltage conversion is by coil, or by voltage boosting or reducing transformer. In both cases, transistor switching produces the voltage conversion.
Inductive storage converters of the flyback type use one coil and few components. This simple architecture is suitable for low power use. Forward-type switched mode converters use a transformer and more complex electronics, suitable for low-voltage, high-amperage output. They also offer adjustable galvanic isolation between the input and the output.
Choice will depend on output voltage and available power, as well as galvanic isolation.
