Continuous miner MC51

Overview
The MC51 is an agile, compact continuous miner designed for hard rock tunnelling and excavation. At 13.2 m (43 ft.) long, the machine can rotate on its center axis within approximately 6 m for fast deployment in confined headings. It employs Komatsu DynaCut technology, a dynamic undercutting method that produces consistent rock fragment sizes for efficient handling and continuous operation.

Features and benefits

• Fully remote controlled — Remote positioning sensors, onboard cameras and a touchscreen tablet enable precise navigation and keep operators away from the cutting face.
• Fully electric system — Eliminates onboard diesel, reducing underground ventilation needs. Low power requirement: 320 kW (≈430 HP) (1000 V, 50 & 60 Hz), enabling integration into most mine power systems.
• Flexible cutting profile — Designed to cut a 5 m x 5 m tunnel profile with ±50 mm accuracy along the excavation length. Capable of cutting varied rock types and negotiating tight corners up to 250 MPa rock hardness.
• Excellent tunnel quality — DynaCut produces accurate, clean profiles that can reduce roof and ground support requirements. Integrated conveyor captures cut material and supports proper water drainage without need for concrete or road fill.
• DynaCut technology — Dynamic undercutting exploits tensile weaknesses in rock to deliver smaller, uniform fragments for superior material handling productivity.
• Continuous vs. batch — Continuous mining with automation increases process control and can reduce the number of ancillary machines by up to 50% compared with traditional batch cycles.
