An ultrasonic flow meter uses the propagation of sound waves in a moving fluid to determine flow rate by measuring the time required for the waves to traverse the fluid.
ApplicationsSuch instruments are able to measure the flow of liquids and gases in a pipe.
TechnologiesThese devices consist of a pair of transducers which emit and receive ultrasonic impulses. Waves are emitted both with and against fluid flow. The difference in transit time of the upstream and downstream waves is proportional to the velocity of the fluid. Combined with pipe diameter, this information is used to calculate flow volume.
Meters can be placed within the pipe or clamped to its exterior surface. The latter arrangement is capable of measuring flow in pipes up to four meters in diameter.
Choice will depend on the nature of the fluid, gas or liquid, its temperature, pressure and other characteristics. Other factors include the required degree of accuracy and whether an inserted or clamp-on model is more appropriate. Some are equipped with a digital display.
