Product overview
The PIP is an airborne-capable precipitation imaging probe that measures particle size and shape from 100 µm to 6.2 mm using a 64‑element optical array. It captures shadow slices of particles traversing a collimated laser and reconstructs images to identify particle presence, size and morphology.

Technology
  • Particle imaging Shadow images from particles crossing a collimated 660 nm laser are projected onto a linear 64‑element photodetector array.
  • Individual time-resolved "slices" from the array are combined to reconstruct particle images for size and shape analysis.

PADS — Particle Analysis and Display System
The PIP supports optional PADS software providing a virtual instrument panel for control, real-time display and logging. Key functions include:

  • Display of particle volume and number concentrations, Median Volume Diameter (MVD) and Effective Diameter (ED)
  • Computed liquid water content (LWC)
  • Instrument telemetry: laser current and electronics voltages
  • Data playback for post‑flight analysis
