Overview
The model 989 delivers the same performance as model 988 in a more compact design and includes two mounting points for easy installation. When used with infrared cameras, the unit can be suspended from the top or bottom using standard tripod-mounting fittings. The upgraded controller can be locked to a single temperature or set across a wider range (20 °C to 50 °C). The model 989 features a standard PC interface for monitoring and adjusting temperature from a computer.

Detailed description
This blackbody source model 989 is designed as a simple, affordable, high-precision device for calibrating thermal imagers and infrared thermometers used at temperatures near the human body. Unlike single-heater devices, the thermoelectric heat pump allows the block to hold setpoints in high ambient temperatures and to operate below ambient temperature.
The response time is very fast, typically under five minutes to reach the required temperature. The model 989 can be used horizontally or vertically. The unit is fitted with a high-emissivity grooved plate with a diameter of 70 mm. Plate temperature is adjustable from 20 °C to 50 °C with a resolution of 0.01 °C.
To reduce sensitivity to drafts and ambient temperature effects, a stainless steel extension tube can be installed in front of the plate. The longest tube is 210 mm while the short tube is 40 mm and is particularly useful for checking medical thermometers. For single fixed-temperature applications (for example 38 °C), the temperature can be locked on the controller to prevent accidental changes. The unit can be switched between Celsius and Fahrenheit.
