OverviewThe 452 is a practical, safe device for creating an ice mantle on a water triple-point cell. It forms a near-0°C ice mantle composed of successive layers, suitable for water triple-point cells.
OperationThe device consists of an anti-gravity heat-pipe rod specifically designed for this application. The heat-pipe rod allows the cell to be extended and channels cold/hot heat exchange from a small container filled with solid carbon dioxide or liquid nitrogen. Because of the low temperature gradient along the rod, the resulting ice mantle is close to 0°C and made of layered deposits.
Use and advantagesThe device is effective for increasing the ice mantle thickness at the bottom of the cell. Adding a small amount of alcohol (e.g. 1 cm3) inside the cell concentrates the temperature transfer on the lower section, promoting thickening of the mantle at the cell base. The 452 reduces waiting times and limits direct cold handling during ice-mantle generation.
