OverviewA metering pump solenoid is an electromagnetic actuator used to displace a piston or diaphragm in dosing pumps. It consists of a coil and a movable plunger (armature). When energized, electromagnetic force moves the plunger to generate fluid flow through the pump chamber. Compared with motor-driven actuators, solenoid actuators are compact, provide fast response and have a simple construction, making them suitable for low‑flow and intermittent dosing in industrial processes.
Applications- Chemical dosing and injection systems (pH adjustment, chlorine dosing)
- Water and wastewater treatment plants
- Medical devices and laboratory dispensers for precise fluid delivery
- Food & beverage processing for controlled dispensing of flavors and additives
- Agricultural dosing in fertigation and pesticide injection systems
- Industrial automation: lubricators, coolant and chemical dosing systems, printing and textile machinery
- Environmental protection equipment and fuel additive systems
Key Features- Fast response and high actuation speed for precise dosing
- Accurate fluid delivery controlled by stroke length and actuation frequency
- Compact footprint compared with motor-driven solutions
- Low power consumption and energy-efficient operation
- Simple design for easy integration and maintenance
- Available materials suitable for corrosive media when specified
Advantages & Disadvantages- Advantages: precise dosing, compact size, rapid response, low maintenance and low energy use
- Disadvantages: not optimal for very large flow volumes, heat generation at high frequency, potential vibration/noise, reduced life in aggressive media if improper materials chosen
Troubleshooting / Common Issues- Failure to start: check supply voltage, coil continuity, electrical connections and overheating
- Poor pumping performance: verify input voltage, springs, plungers and mechanical wear
- Fluid leakage: inspect diaphragms, seals and plungers; replace worn parts
- Overheating: reduce operating frequency, verify correct voltage and improve ventilation
- Vibration/noise: check lubrication, component wear and assembly balance

How it worksThe solenoid coil generates a magnetic field when energized, moving the plunger/armature which displaces a diaphragm or piston in the pump chamber. When power is removed the return spring repositions the armature and the intake valve allows liquid into the chamber. Output flow is determined by the stroke length and actuation frequency.
