Product overview
The CP6940 is a fully managed 1/10/40 Gigabit Ethernet switch for 6U CompactPCI® and VME embedded systems. Designed for long-term programs and harsh environments, it supports extended operating temperatures and is suited for high-performance multi-CPU servers in aerospace, defense and industrial communication networks. The product is developed and produced in Europe by Kontron.

Compatibility & design
CP6940 is a successor to CP6924 and CP6930 and complies with PICMG 2.16 and VITA 31.1 standards. The design integrates Broadcom single-chip switch technology with a dedicated high-performance QorIQ® microcontroller to separate fast packet switching from management tasks.

Performance & architecture
Non-blocking architecture with line-rate forwarding for all packet sizes. Dynamic memory allocation and burst absorption via MMU optimize multicast throughput. Separate management CPU avoids throughput limitations and enables future firmware upgrades and TSN expansion with optional software.

Management & network features
Comprehensive management: SNMP, CLI (Telnet/SSH), in-band and out-of-band management (Ethernet/RS232), IPMI. Routing and forwarding: IPv4 (IPv6 optional), OSPF, RIP, VRRP, static routing, VLANs, LAG (802.3ad), QoS (802.1p), Spanning Tree variants (STP, RSTP, MSTP, PVST, RPVST), BFD, multicast forwarding and time synchronization (802.1AS).
