Product overviewTriggering is the process that creates the initial ionization inside a Xenon flashlamp by producing a high‑voltage pulse that initiates discharge. Most flashlamp systems use a trigger coil (trigger transformer) to generate short, high‑voltage pulses (typically microseconds or less). Excelitas supplies a range of trigger coils in multiple sizes and configurations for both external and series triggering, with variants suitable for SMD assembly.
DetailsTwo principal triggering approaches are used: series injection triggering and external triggering with dedicated coils.
External triggering applies a high‑voltage pulse to form a thin ionized streamer between anode and cathode. Coupling methods include a thin nickel wire wound around the lamp or a metal stripe on the lamp envelope. External trigger coils are typically smaller, lighter and more cost‑effective for many applications.
Series triggering provides higher timing accuracy and is commonly used with liquid‑cooled laser lamps. Coils for series triggering are larger because they must produce the HV ignition and withstand lamp currents up to several thousand amperes.
